The Wales rugby team will consider going on strike in the week building up to their crunch Six Nations clash with England, a move that could put the entire competition in jeopardy.
The BBC reports that the possibility of industrial action will be raised at a meeting of the body representing professional players in Wales in the coming days.
Wales are due to take on England in the third round of the Guinness Six Nations on Saturday, February 25th. However, if industrial action is taken, then that game at Cardiff may well be postponed or even cancelled.
The issues between the Welsh players and the WRU centre on pay disputes and frozen contracts.
Recruitment has been put on hold for the four professional regions of Wales, which are Cardiff, Ospreys, Dragons and Scarlets.
A new financial agreement between the WRU and the regions has yet to be formally agreed, leaving a significant number of players with uncertain futures.
Sam Cross, who has been capped twice for Wales, took to Twitter to give his thoughts on the situation.
A number of accounts of unnamed Welsh players was published by the Daily Mail on Tuesday, and appears to show how players are concerned by the lack of certainty surrounding their futures.
One player, described as a Six Nations squad member, said: “I can’t believe I’m five months away from the end of my contract and eight months away from the World Cup and my future isn’t certain yet.
“I can’t apply for a mortgage and I’m on antidepressants. I’m also one big injury away from not having a job in July, yet I’m starting for Wales every week and the WRU is making tens of millions from international matches.”
