Six people have been rushed to hospital after a gas explosion at a recycling plant in northern Victoria.

Emergency services were called to the Shepparton North facility about 8.20am on Tuesday, following an incident involving a metal shredder, Fire Rescue Victoria said.

Ambulance Victoria flew a man in his 60s in a serious condition and a man in his 40s in a critical condition to the Melbourne’ s Alfred Hospital.

A further two women and two men were driven to Goulburn Valley Health in a stable condition.

The accident occurred at a business that provides residential and commercial recycling services for gas bottles and fire extinguishers.

“On arrival at the scene, the fire had been extinguished,” an FRV spokeswoman said in a statement.

Fire crews worked alongside Ambulance Victoria to treat six injured workers.

WorkSafe are investigating the incident.
