Six former Manchester United players still EFL managers despite Steve Bruce sacking

Former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce has left his latest job, at Championship side West Bromwich Albion. The 61-year-old leaves after just eight months in charge at the Hawthorns with the Baggies enduring a wretched start to the campaign, lying in the relegation places with just one league win so far this term.

A brief Albion statement said: "The club would like to place on record its thanks to Steve Bruce and his coaching staff for their efforts since arriving in February. The process of recruiting a new manager is now underway and an appointment will be confirmed in due course."

In being relieved of his duties, it whittles down the number of former United stars managing in the EFL. Here, we take a look at those former Old Trafford stars still bossing in England.

Michael Appleton (Blackpool)

A lifelong United fan, Appleton progressed through the academy ranks but would make only a handful of senior outings before being sold to Preston. He would ultimately retire at just 27 through injury but has gone on to forge a successful coaching career.

He managed Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn, Oxford and Lincoln before returning to the Seasiders last summer for a second spell at the helm.

Mark Robins (Coventry)

Robins holds the famous tag of allegedly scoring the goal that kept Sir Alex Ferguson in a job back in 1990.

He has gone on to manage five different clubs and has enjoyed plenty of success in his current role as Coventry. In his second spell in charge Robins has guided the Sky Blues to promotion out of both Leagues One and Two as well as an EFL Trophy win.

Paul Ince (Reading)

Ince led United to two Premier League titles and two FA Cups in his time at Old Trafford. Since moving into management he has achieved success in keeping Macclesfield in the Football League and winning promotion with MK Dons.

After eight years out of management he made a surprise return to the dugout earlier this year with Reading. After keeping them in the Championship last season the Royals have started strongly this term and are bunched in among the top six in the second tier.

Mark Hughes (Bradford)

Plenty of eyebrows were raised when 'Sparky' made his return to management earlier this year. After having bossed solely in the Premier League, managing the likes of Manchester City, Stoke and Southampton, Hughes took up the vacancy at League Two Bradford City.

The Bantams are expected to be promoted this season and so far they are well-placed and sit in the play-off places.

Richie Wellens (Leyton Orient)

The former midfielder made just one senior appearance for United, in a League Cup tie in 1999. But he went on to enjoy a fine career in the Football League and has continued to make his mark as a manager.

Just 42, he is already in his fifth different role. Having managed Oldham, Swindon, Salford and Doncaster he's now at Leyton Orient and they look well-poised for a promotion push. They are second in the table, have lost just once in 12 games and have the league's best defence.

Neil Wood (Salford City)

Wood joined United at the age of eight but a variety of injuries affected his chances and he never made a first-team appearance.

He retired still in his twenties and moved straight into coaching and returned to United working with the youth teams. Promotion after promotion followed and he eventually rose to under-23s coach during which time a clutch of players went on to make first-team debuts. Salford, co-owned by former United stars such as Gary Neville and Nicky Butt, poached him last summer and in his first senior coaching role the Ammies are currently fourth in League Two.
