After months of working hard to get into shape ahead of the summer holidays, many will be looking forward to relaxing and letting their hair down on their trips this year. And while holiday are to be enjoyed, some may be concerned about the impact on their hard work.
But diet expert Michael Mosley has shared some advice and simple tips which could help people while they are away. Mosley, who has been credited for creating the popular Fast 800 diet, which includes the idea of Time Restricted Eating (TRE), believes it's not just about what you eat, but when you do it.
TRE involved fasting for 12 hours during every 24 hour period. His advice means you have a shorter time period throughout the day to eat - which will allow sufficient time for cell repair, Daily Record reports. He also says the benefits including better mood and energy levels.
And while many would be forgiven for not sticking to a routine while on their holidays, the expert says you can still incorporate TRE into your day while travelling, even if you'll be dining later than usual.
Here he has shared some advice to help people while they are away. He urges that if your holiday package includes breakfast, see what the latest available time to eat is as it will enable you to enjoy a bigger breakfast that will keep you fuelled throughout the day and enjoy your evening meal a little earlier.
He advises to walk regularly as it's a great way to keep active outside of a more structured work out plan.
He also states that portion control is a massive factor in enjoying these foods, as it can be easy to forget and fill your plate to the top, and holidaymakers are also warned about the impact of drinking too much alcohol while they are away, as it can be a factor in weight gain. The advice offered suggests that if you are looking to enjoy a drink on holiday, opt for a red wine, and regularly drinking water between beverages will help stagger your intake.
These are the foods Michael has told people to avoid at breakfast:
- Fruit juices
- Pastries
- Cereals
- Muffins and cake
- Dried fruit
- Hash browns
Those watching their health can enjoy the following breakfast items regularly:
- Eggs
- Omelettes – some hotels have omelette stations where you can choose your own fillings, so don’t be shy with the vegetables.
- Greek yogurt with berries
- Vegetables are often available either cooked or raw. You may find cooked spinach, which is delicious with eggs
- Cheese, nuts and avocado are great healthy fats to add to your plate as they’ll keep you fuller for longer.
The following foods can be enjoyed occasionally:
- Bread – depending on where you’re holidaying, there may be some healthier bread options. Avoid the plain white varieties and occasionally enjoy sourdough or rye, if available.
- Sausages and bacon
- Local treats – holidays are special occasions, and don’t happen too often, so you may want to involve yourself in trying the local delicacies every now and then.
But the weight loss expert also urges people not to worry if they do fall off the bandwagon while on holiday as he says you can easily get back on track once you arrive home.
