Plans for 12 houses on the site of a former pub have been given the green light.
The Sutton Arms, on Sherdley Road in St Helens, was a popular public house before it closed its doors in 2011. The premises was the target of two arson attacks in two months, in April and May 2012 - leaving the site completely burned out.
It was demolished shortly after, and plans have been submitted to St Helens Borough Council to redevelop the land. An application to build ten two-storey semi detached houses, and two detached two-storey houses was recently approved.

Part of a design and access statement for the plans stated that a previous application submitted 11 years ago for the demolition of the premises and erection of 18 homes was acceptable. The land also sits above old mining shafts, which had to be taken into account.
The plans add: "Sherdley Road has limited opportunity for dwellings due to the location of the mine shafts. The corner was addressed with a double fronted detached property. The building line was set out from the existing property."
Recommending the plans for approval, case office Natasha Ayres said: "The proposed dwellings are provided with adequate internal spaces, outlook as well as private outdoor amenity space It is not considered that the proposed development would result in a loss of privacy or over shadowing for neighbouring residents".
There were no objections filed to the council. Formal planning permission was granted.
