Site of former Newport pub set to finally be developed into homes after more than a decade

A long-empty former pub site is finally set to be developed into housing more than a decade after it first closed.

An application to build eight homes on the site of the former Black Horse Inn on Somerton Road, Newport was formally approved by Newport City Council last week.

The pub was once a favourite in the Lliswerry area but closed for good back in 2008. It was demolished in 2014 and has remained empty ever since despite several failed efforts to develop the site.

Plans by Tesco to open a store on the site never came to fruition, while a planning application by Harrod Homes to build housing back in 2016 was eventually scrapped due to parking concerns in the area.

The site has since attracted anti-social behaviour, having been illegally accessed on a number of occasions.

But the latest plans to build eight houses on the site can now go ahead after planners granted permission last week.

There will also be off-road parking and boundary walls and fencing.

The plans are the latest in a number of proposals to build housing on the sites of old pubs in Newport. In August plans to build 21 flats on the Ye Olde Stave pub in Rogerstone were given the green light despite a host of local objections. Plans to build 18 apartments on the former Victoria Inn site were also submitted in September.

The new houses on Somerton road will be located near several schools as well as Newport Retail Park and Newport International Sports Village.
