Site of former Killingworth pub now approved for 22 affordable homes

Plans to build 22 new homes on the site of a former Killingworth pub have been given the go-ahead.

The former West House pub site, in Grasmere Court, will become the home to ten two-bedroom houses, two three-bedroom homes, two one-bedroom flats, and eight two-bedroom flats.

All the homes have been classed as "affordable housing" which, according to council documents, "significantly weighs in favour" of the application. No objections have been registered to North Tyneside Council's plans.

The Northumberland and Newcastle Society praised the council's attempts to create more affordable housing in the area. In a written statement, it said: "The proposed plans for an infill of much-needed social housing in Killingworth makes good use of a currently underused brownfield site. Although the designs are a little bland, they are, however, in keeping with the properties in the immediate vicinity."

The society also praised the inclusion of air source heat pumps in the plans, stating they will assist the authority's target of being carbon zero by 2030.

The area used to house West House Farm, which was demolished in the 1960s and rebuilt as a pub and community space.

Despite the site's long history, North Tyneside Council's archaeology and heritage officer did believe the development will significantly impact archaeological heritage assets in the area.

Valley councillor, Tommy Mulvenna, suggested that given there were no objections the proposals be put straight to the vote following an officer's report and the application was approved unanimously.
