"Sit down!" Ian Wright upset Curtis Jones with reaction to Man Utd goal vs Liverpool

Curtis Jones was unhappy with Ian Wright's reaction to Manchester United's first goal against Liverpool on Monday.

The Red Devils ran out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford either side of the break. Mohamed Salah pulled one back for Jurgen Klopp's side but it wasn't enough to prevent the Reds from suffering their first defeat of the season.

However, Jones wasn't best pleased with Wright's reaction to Sancho's strike. The pair were watching the game together in the stands and Wright decided to stand up and applaud the finish from the former Borussia Dortmund man, who has struggled for form since his move back to Manchester last summer.

Wright told his Wrighty's House podcast : "'When Jadon Sancho scored, you get up and clap. And I don’t want them to think, 'oh why are not clapping? Who are you supporting? Liverpool?'.

"Curtis Jones was watching it with us. So when I got up and I was clapping Jadon, I said I’m so pleased for Jadon, he went like that to me, like 'sit down' with his face."

Liverpool are still winless from their three Premier League games so far this season and sit in 16th place with just two points picked up in draws with Fulham and Crystal Palace. Up next for the Reds is a home clash against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

Jones is yet to make an appearance for Liverpool this season after picking up a calf injury in pre-season, but is said to be nearing a return to training to bolster Klopp's options in midfield. Thiago and Naby Keita also missed Monday's defeat, with Fabinho only fit enough to be named as a substitute.

This meant Jordan Henderson and James Milner had to start alongside Harvey Elliott and United totally dominated the midfield battle. It is an area of concern for Klopp and Jamie Carragher believes the Reds must sign a midfielder before the end of the transfer window.

He told Sky Sports: "Liverpool need a midfield player, not in terms of the number of the squad or to beef it up, they need someone to go and play and Liverpool feel that is not available right now. I would stick with what Liverpool do where they don’t panic, don’t do things because they’ve got to go get someone.

"Jurgen Klopp isn’t daft, Thiago, Fabinho, Henderson, they’ve got a good midfield but they’re all over 30 and that’s not ideal for any team. Especially when you want to play as intense as Liverpool do.

"They’ve got numbers in there but in terms of quality, Liverpool need a midfield player. If it was available Liverpool would buy him but they’ve obviously got something lined up they feel then. There’s no doubt Liverpool need more in midfield, midfield is the one glaring part of the team that stands out that can’t go against Manchester City when you see the quality in there."
