Sister's final tribute to tragic swimmer as Haydn Griffiths laid to rest

The sister of Haydn Griffiths, who went missing after going swimming paid tribute to her brother as he was laid to rest.

The 23-year-old was last seen in the water near Derby Pool, in New Brighton, at around 10.30pm on Tuesday, July 19. It's thought Haydn, from Lowton, was attempting to swim out to the wind turbines when he disappeared in the water and didn't resurface.

A huge search was launched by the Coastguard and lifeboat volunteers along with police and the fire service, but was called off at around 5pm on Wednesday, July 20 after 18 hours. Police found a body at the Pier Head, Liverpool, on Sunday, July 24, which was later confirmed to be Haydn.

Haydn's funeral took place on Tuesday August, 16 at Howe Bridge Crematorium in Atherton, Manchester where family and close friends attended. Sister Megan paid tribute to her brother on her Instagram stories, sharing a number of photos of Haydn and said how they will be celebrating his life.

A GoFundMe page was also set up ahead of Haydn's funeral, where a number of pictures were shared of the 23-year-old, including him taking part in windsailing and with nature. The fundraising page said instead of flowers, any donations will be used for a remembrance bench for Haydn close to home, continued support with donations towards the RNL, improving signage and raising awareness of Water Safety and donations to wildlife charities.

Haydn's story resonated throughout the community, with a party of more than 100 people joining in an extensive search along the coastline. A vigil also took place in New Brighton on August 1 in his memory.

Speaking on ITV Granada last month, Haydn's sister Megan Griffiths said she was "so proud" to be his sister. She said: "Haydn was amazing, he is amazing. He was this big handsome giant, with the kindest heart and I am so proud to be his sister and I am so proud of what the community have done to help."
