Sir Jim Ratcliffe must ‘restore Man United to former glories’, say suporters’ trust

Sir Jim Ratcliffe was today told he must be willing to invest to “restore Manchester United to former glories” after confirming his interest in buying the club.

The British billionaire has also been told by the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) that fan ownership would need to be part of any potential takeover.

Sir Jim expressed his interest in buying Manchester United yesterday after a report from Bloomberg said the Glazer family are willing to sell a minority stake in the club.

The 69-year-old, who expressed late interest in buying Chelsea earlier this year, is a Manchester United fan but the club’s supporters this morning stressed certain criteria that he and other prospective owners must be willing to meet.

“Speculation is mounting about a potential change of ownership or new investors at Manchester United. Whilst supporters have called for change, of course this has to be the right change,” said MUST in a statement.

“Any prospective new owner or investor has to be committed to the culture, ethos and best traditions of the club. They have to be willing to invest to restore United to former glories, and that investment must be real new money spent on the playing side and the stadium.

“Finally any new ownership structure must embed supporters, including a degree of fan share ownership, in their operating model.

“These are the criteria supporters will judge any bid on. We are open to dialogue with any bidder, and look forward to any such discussions.”
