Sir Ian Rankin awarded Knighthood by Princess Anne

Crime fiction writer Ian Rankin, who is best known for his Inspector Rebus novels, has been awarded Knighthood by Princess Royal Anne.

Sir Rankin was honoured with the Knighthood for his services to literature and charity during a ceremony on June 13, 2023, at Buckingham Palace in London, UK.

On being knighted, the Scottish author said that it was "absolutely thrilling". He further said, as reported by BBC, "A few years ago I was given an OBE and I probably thought that’s about as much as I can expect. I was very happy with that, but this was absolutely thrilling. And the fact that it was for charity work, or charitable giving, as well as the output of books was especially good because my wife and I have run a charitable foundation for quite a few years now but anonymously. Well, someone's outed us now, I guess. Someone must have put me forward for this."

The 63-year-old author was given the OBE in 2002 for his services to literature.

For those who don't know, Rankin anonymously runs a charitable foundation with his wife Miranda Harvey. In 2020, he had 'given £200,000 from his detective books to a charity set up with his wife,' reported TFN.

Rankin's 'Knots & Crosses', the first novel in the Inspector Rebus series, was published in 1987. Since then, he has written 26 books in the series. Rankin's books are international bestsellers and they have been translated to 22 languages.

The author also shared that he has take a year-long break before he starts working on the next book in the Rebus series.

Others who were also honoured with Knighthood included theatre actress Cleopatra Mary Palmer, Sandra Bailie, former rugby player Floyd Steadman, among others.
