They may have a music icon for a parent, but Sir Elton John says his children have no interest in following him into the spotlight.
The 77-year-old legendary singer-songwriter shares sons Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11, with filmaker husband David Furnish.
Speaking to Kate Thornton on Greatest Hits Radio on Friday, he admitted it took a bit of cajoling to get his eldest to take part in filming for his new Disney + documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, which is out in cinemas today ahead of a December 13 release on the streamer.
He explained: “They’re not interested in being in the limelight. In fact Zachary, our eldest, didn’t really want to be filmed at all, he doesn’t like it, but we explained the situation to him and he agreed to be filmed at the Dodgers Stadium.
The Rocketman hit-maker was joined in the studio by American singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile for the first play on the station of his new single Never Too Late.
Taken from the documentary of the same name, the song, written by Carlile for Sir Elton, plays out over the credits of a film that looks back at his astonishing 50-year career and reflects on him finally finding happiness thanks to true love and his family.
Explaining the song’s influence, he said: “When I saw the lyric [to new song Never Too Late] it kind of described how I am.
“I look forward, I’m tough and I probably am an ‘iron baby’ after what I’ve been through.
“The documentary was originally called Farewell Yellow Brick Road, the name of the tour, and I just thought that was a really boring title… Never Too Late sums up the doc itself as well as the historical footage and where I am now. It’s never too late for anybody to change their lives around.”
Greatest Hits Radio with Kate Thornton airs weekdays 1 – 4pm, also available on the Rayo app. Never Too Late (From The Film Elton John: Never Too Late) is available to stream now here.
