Sir Chris Hoy in race to raise funds for homelessness charity

Following its successful inaugural ride last year, Social Bite’s Break the Cycle returned even bigger for 2022

STARS including Sir Chris Hoy, Elaine C Smith, and Gregor Townsend led the way yesterday as they joined hundreds of cyclists to participate in Social Bite’s Break the Cycle event, to help raise money to end homelessness across the UK.

Following its successful inaugural ride last year, it returned even bigger for 2022, with fundraisers cycling a 66-mile route from Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, through to BT Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

Participants and their families were also treated to a festival atmosphere at the end site, with food and drink from some of the country’s top suppliers, as well as a routine from actress and comedian Elaine C Smith and music from local acts.

Legendary fitness guru Mr Motivator was also at the start line to make sure everyone was warmed up, before heading to Edinburgh to perform a warm-down routine.

Former Scotland rugby international Al Kellock also took part, leading Team Tom Smith, which comprised rugby stars of yesteryear.

Some 10% of all their fundraising is being donated to a trust set up in aid of Tom Smith’s family, after the former Scotland and British & Irish Lions prop tragically passed away in April.

The total raised will include an anonymous donation of £500,000 towards the charity’s plans to build a new village in Greater Glasgow.

Josh Littlejohn MBE, CEO and co-founder of Social Bite, said: “We know times are tough at the moment for everyone, so we really do appreciate that so many people have got on board this year. The money raised will help us provide vital support to people who’ve experienced homelessness.

Cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy (pictured), who led a team at the race, said: “I’ve been a big fan of Social Bite for a number of years now.

“To see how they’ve built upon last year’s success is really impressive and it’s a pleasure to be a part of the great work they do.”
