Sir Alex Ferguson praises Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag in rare TV interview

Sir Alex Ferguson says Erik ten Hag’s vision for Manchester United along with his authoritative status within the club has helped him get off to a successful start at Old Trafford, as have his signings.

The Dutchman lifted his first piece of silverware as Reds boss on Sunday with a 2-0 Wembley win over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final. Ferguson was at the game and was invited into the dressing room to join in with celebrations following the trophy lift.

It is United’s first accolade since their 2017 Europa League success and just their fourth since Ferguson’s retirement 10 years ago. Ten Hag brought in five permanent signings over the summer, three of which started the final in Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Casemiro.

Ten Hag was spotted dining with Ferguson last week, and after full-time on Sunday he detailed how he agrees with the current manager's approach to the club having already made some “really good” decisions.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “Erik mentioned it this morning, and I think he’s right. United are based on success and he’s going the right way about it. His signings have been really good, I think that was important.

“And he’s got a grip of the club which is really, really big for him. When you come to United, you try and get off to a good start right away and he’s doing well, he really is.”

Ten Hag penned an open letter to United fans following the Carabao Cup final victory, and promised to push for more silverware with the Reds still in every other competition this term.

"We know the importance of silverware throughout the history of this great club. We are so happy to bring the trophy back to Old Trafford but we are by no means satisfied and we will not stop here,” he wrote.

"Together we have experienced the feeling of what it means to win together for Manchester United. It is truly magnificent and will only make each of us hungrier for more success.”
