Sir Alex Ferguson harassed by Man City fan outside the Etihad after Man Utd defeat

Legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was shockingly harassed by a Manchester City supporter after Sunday afternoon's derby.

The hosts won 4-1 at the Etihad thanks to braces from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez, completing City's first Premier League "double" over United since the 2018-19 campaign.

Ferguson, who won 13 league titles and countless other trophies during his 26-year reign at Old Trafford, attended the game and was seen leaving the ground afterwards.

A supporter filmed the 80-year-old making his way to his vehicle, goading Ferguson and shouted: "Never in my lifetime! City, City, City, City, City..."

Ferguson didn't engage with the fan, who was referring to a comment made by the former United boss in September 2009.

Can Manchester United finish in the top four this season? Let us know in the comments below!

At the time, City had recently been taken over by Sheikh Mansour and many were backing them to knock Premier League champions United off their perch.

Ferguson was asked in a press conference if United would ever go into the Manchester derby as underdogs, to which he replied: "What time is it?

"I think it's time for me to leave... not in my lifetime."

United went on to win lose the 2011-12 Premier League title race to City with virtually the final kick of the season, as Sergio Aguero scored a memorable winner against QPR.

Ferguson's side then regained their mantle the following term - convincingly winning the title - before the Scot called time on his illustrious managerial career in May 2013.

Since then, however, United haven't won the Premier League or Champions League.

The Red Devils have only lifted three major trophies in the last eight-and-a-half years: the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League.

City, meanwhile, have won four Premier League titles and reached last season's Champions League final. They are the favourites to win both trophies this season.

There was also a banner at the Etihad on Sunday that read "not in my lifetime", which was on display behind one of the goals.

The supporter was condemned for his actions on social media, with one Reddit user writing: "Harassing an 80-year-old man, really tough guy that City fan."

Ferguson remains an influential figure at United, as he currently sits on the board of directors and is often seen attending games at Old Trafford.

United have struggled to replace him since his departure.

His immediate successor David Moyes was sacked just nine months into the job. High-profile managers Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho followed, yet neither of them managed to deliver sustained success.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Mourinho and aimed to replicate Ferguson's philosophy, but was fired after failing to win a trophy during his three-year reign, with Ralf Rangnick the current interim boss.

The German will have a say in the club's next permanent manager and the team's future, as he starts a two-year consultancy job this summer.
