Engineers have been called in to inspect a gaping sinkhole that led to the closure of a busy town centre road.
A section of Albert Road was coned off at the junction with Peel House Lane in Widnes following the discovery of the foot-wide gap in the road.
Halton Borough Council described the situation as a “road collapse”.

When the ECHO visited the area today a white bag and old tarmac were visible inside the hole.
United Utilities had deployed a vehicle to the scene following a request to inspect and a worker was speaking on the phone nearby.
A spokeswoman for the company said the cause of the sinkhole was not yet known.
A Halton Council spokesperson said: “Investigation and emergency repairs are underway following a road collapse outside 138 Albert Road (by the junction of Peel House Lane).
“This means going south on Peel House Lane you cannot turn left to access Halton View and from Marzahn Way you cannot turn right to Halton View.
The United Utilities spokeswoman told the ECHO: “We will be investigating it.
“We’ve been asked to go back between 7pm and 8pm when it’s a bit quieter.
“We’re working with the council to investigate, so we don’t know what the cause is.
“We’ll be looking into it.”
