'Single-handedly saved us' - Man City fans react to reports linking Ilkay Gundogan with exit

If recent reports are anything to go by, the first signing of the Pep Guardiola era at Manchester City looks set to depart the club.

Ilkay Gundogan joined Guardiola at City in the summer of 2016, but with just one year left on his contract and having seen his game time reduce this season, the German midfielder could be on his way out. Over his six seasons at the club, Gundogan has made 252 appearances for the Blues, scoring 47 goals and providing 33 assists.

In that time he has won three Premier League titles, four League Cups and one FA Cup. After enduring a difficult first couple of seasons in Manchester, Gundogan was at his very best in 2020-21 as his 13 league goals helped City to a third Premier League title under Pep.

On Twitter, City fans have been paying tribute to one of the greatest midfielders to ever don the sky blue shirt.

@DamoFrod: Well this is disappointing news. Really like the guy. Under-stated excellence.

@Why_Rizmyth: He single handedly saved us last season - still a lot to offer

@Abdul_Moeez4: Sigh, he been great ever since he signed for us. Never forget last season. Thank you for everything Whippy!

@Thesingingblue: great player he's been for us. Nice to see us freshening things up. It's never a good idea to let a team go stale! Gundo is a class footballer and a great role model so it's not going to be easy to replace Ferna and Gundo's experience... good job peps building for his ten year contract.
