Singer Paul Heaton puts cash behind bar at two Glasgow pubs to mark 60th birthday

Singer Paul Heaton is offering Glaswegians free drinks today after putting money behind bars at various boozers across the UK.

To mark his 60th birthday, the former The Beautiful South star has confirmed he'll be paying the bill at 60 pubs around the country that hold a special place in his heart - two of them are right here in Glasgow.

Heaton had planned to party by staging a bicycle tour and performing at 60 pubs across the country, but the plans were shelved due to recording delays as a result of the pandemic.

To try and make up for the lack of a Glasgow show the singer has decided to put cash behind the bar at two city institutions, namely The Old Toll Bar on Paisley Road West and Nice N Sleazy on Sauchiehall Street.

Heaton took to Twitter to make the announcement to his 110,000 followers, and said he wanted to pay thanks to those who had supported him throughout his career. Even though he didn't confirm how much he had put behind the bar at some of his favourite boozers, he did encourage the locals to drink "until the bar runs dry".

He tweeted: “To celebrate my 60th birthday (on Monday, May 9) I’d originally intended to do another bicycle tour, visiting & performing at 60 pubs across the UK and Ireland. However, due to recording delays caused by the pandemic, I’ve had to shelve these plans for the time being.

“Instead, I’ve decided the next best way to celebrate this coming of age is to handpick 60 pub across the UK and Ireland and put a given amount of money behind the bar of each one. Then, both regulars and yourselves can enjoy a birthday drink on me (until the money runs out, or the bar runs dry!).

“The hope is to bring people together on the day, whilst recognising that many folk who bought my records or showed me support over the years, could do with a wee party, as we come out of covid and hit potential financial struggles. So, if there's one near you please head over on Monday, show your support and raise a toast to me on my birthday."
