Sinead O’Connor left her three surviving children a combined £1.7m, advising them to “milk” her music back catalogue “for all that it’s worth” after her death.
The Irish singer, who passed away aged 56 in London in July 2023, had three surviving children: Jake, Roisin, and Yeshua. Her death came around 18 months after the tragic loss of her son Shane.
A document outlining her last wishes, obtained by The Sun, stated: “I direct that after my death, and at the discretion of any of my children who are then over 18, my albums are to be released so as to milk it for what it’s worth.
“My children can dispense my ashes as they see fit.”
The report also revealed that her estate’s value had reduced to £1.4m after funeral costs and debts were settled.
According to The Sun, the will also requested that she be buried in priestly clothing—a signature outfit from her later career—alongside a Torah and a copy of her 2007 album Theology. These items reflect the time the will was signed in 2013, five years before her conversion to Islam.
O'Connor released 10 albums during her lifetime, culminating in 2014's I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss, and was also highly regarded for her charity work.
“She is one of the most radical, incredible musicians that we’ve had and we’re very, very lucky to have had her,” filmmaker Kathryn Ferguson said in a tribute.
Her cause of death was given as an “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low-grade lower respiratory tract infection”.
She had been married four times to John Reynolds, Nick Sommerlad, Steve Cooney and Barry Herridge.
Mr Reynolds was named as the executor of the will which also saw Yeshua gifted her collection of guitars and Shane take her religious regalia.
Sadly Shane never received the gift as he took his own life in 2022.
“My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God,” O’Connor tweeted in tribute.
