Simon Jordan suggests Philippe Clement's move to Rangers is a step down

Philippe Clement has perhaps taken a step down in his career by picking Rangers as his next step, Simon Jordan has suggested.

The former Crystal Palace owner was discussing the new Ibrox gaffer on talkSPORT with his co-host Jim White this morning.

The topic of conversation actually centered around Frank Lampard and if his managerial capabilities have been overlooked by some clubs in recent months, namely Rangers.

Graeme Souness was on the advisory board as Rangers recruited their new boss to replace Michael Beale last month. The Ibrox legend is on record as saying he would have liked to have seen Lampard get the role.

Jordan does not agree with Souness' view that the Chelsea legend would've been the best fit for the job.

And White asked Jordan on air if Clement has the credentials to succeed at Rangers and ultimately topple Celtic from the summit of the Premiership.

He commented: "I looked at his record and I thought he had a pretty decent record actually. Moving to Rangers is possibly (a step down) in argument terms. Not in terms of the scale of the club but the quality of the league, a little bit of a step sideways if not down. "Souness was interesting the other day. As much as I take a lot of what Graeme says at face value because it's Graeme, his argument for Lampard doing the job is he still has the hunger and ambition. So bleeding what? Has he got the capability?"

Meanwhile, Rangers star Cyriel Dessers insists he's hoping to play again for Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations in January.

But he could miss a host of matches for the Ibrox side if he gets his wish.

Dessers has won four caps for the Super Eagles, but has missed out on the past couple of squads picked by manager Jose Peseiro after being on the standby list.
