Simon Cowell tells Britain's Got Talent solo singer she should join a group

Simon Cowell gave a young sister some unexpected advice on tonight's live semi-final of Britain's Got Talent. The record producer and TV personality told Tia Connolly to consider joining a group rather than sing alone.

The 15-year-old took to the stage to sing Fireworks in tonight's (May 30) episode of BGT. The young singer made the semi-final after wowing the judges during the auditions, after initially believing she was only going to Brtiain's Got Talent to see her mum perform.

But her semi-final performance didn't overly impress the judges. Simon even went as far as to say she wasn't the "best singer" in the competition.

Speaking to Tia, he said: "It's so difficult right now for solo artists. You look really cool and like we said, you're gutsy, and I think, if I were you, I would put a group around you. Because I think that's what you need.

"You need those two or three years. But there are a lot of people I would 'just give up', and I'm not saying that at all. I just think this is one step and my advice as someone who works in the music business is I think you need to be in a group with some friends and then who knows."

Fans on Twitter had mixed feelings about Simon's advice.

Ian (@Spinkzilla) disagreed with the judge's opinions. He said: "A group, Simon? With strong vocals like Tia has? Naaa mate."

Jas Judge (@JasJudge) added: "Cowell trying to plan the next Little Mix..."

Crystal⁷ (@jimins_mochi_x) said: "Yeah, Tia wasn’t the best tonight but there’s no need for all the harsh comments from the judges and everyone on here. BE KIND! She’s got room to grow."

Britain's Got Talent continues on Wednesday, May 31 at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
