Sidcup: Two quizzed by counter-terror police after Ulez camera blown up with IED

Anti-terror police are continuing to quiz two men in their 60s arrested after a Ulez camera and surrounding property were blown up in an explosion in Sidcup, south-east London.

A Ulez camera, newly installed on Willersley Avenue, was targeted on the afternoon of December 6 in an explosion caused by a low-sophistication improvised explosive device.

Police said the Ulez camera, which had been installed on the road earlier that day, was cut down at around 5.15pm and an explosion happened around 90 minutes later.

Footage filmed at the scene shows a dented van and a chunk taken out of a brick wall.

A van and a bus were damaged in the explosion, and one man was treated at the scene.

A 60-year-old man in Sidcup has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause an explosion likely to endanger life or property.

A 61-year-old man has also been arrested in Horsham on suspicion of conspiracy to cause an explosion likely to endanger life or property, and criminal damage.

Both men remain in custody at a south London police station and searches are ongoing at two homes in Sidcup and Horsham.

Detective chief superintendent Trevor Lawry said: “The explosion could easily have had far more harmful consequences, and today’s arrests highlight just how seriously the Met is treating the incident.“My local officers are continuing to work with and support the Counter Terrorism Command who are leading the investigation due to their specialism in dealing with incidents involving the use of explosives.”

The Met Police said the arrests were "a significant step forward in its investigation" but counter terrorism officers are continuing to appeal for information.

The force has asked people who drove or cycled on Willersley Avenue between 4.30pm and 7.30pm on December 6 to share any camera footage they may have.
