"Sickening": Fury as vandals wreck ornate 170-year-old window at Gateshead pub

On Sunday morning its owners arrived to find the decorative windows broken.

A post on the pub's Facebook page said: "The stress and upset of owning a business within Gateshead’s jewel of a Grade II listed building. This time, one of the original 170 year old ornately etched windows. Why do we bother?"

And pictures of the damage prompted an angry reaction from customers.

Rachel Mary Cabral wrote: "This is sickening. I am so sorry. So mindless."

While June Parker said: "That's awful. What do people get out of doing this?"

And Leon Cleife added: "My dad was a craftsman who made those types of windows, all by hand, acid etching and sand blasting. True works of art. Hate to see this."

Northumbria Police has confirmed that an investigation is underway.

A spokeswoman said: "Shortly after 9am on Sunday police received a report of suspected criminal damage at a premises in Gateshead.

“It was reported that a window had been damaged overnight at Central Bar on Half Moon Lane.

“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information can contact police."
