Shunsuke Nakamura in Celtic transfer hope as Parkhead hero reckons J-league recruits can 'make history'

Former Celtic star Shunsuke Nakamura admits watching Ange Postecoglou's quadrant of Japanese recruits gives him "great pleasure".

And now the Parkhead hero hopes other stars from the J-League will follow in their footsteps.

Postecoglou brought striker Kyogo Furuhashi to the club shortly after taking the reins at Parkhead before recruiting Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi in January.

Kyogo is the club's top scorer despite being sidelined since the end of December while the winter window additions have all made important contributions as Celtic remain at the Premiership summit.

Nakamura is delighted Postecoglou has brought some of the J-League's top stars to Scotland and reckons they can write their name in the club's history.

He told The Celtic View: “Their success is a genuine pleasure for me and I’m very glad to see Ange Postecoglou take charge and take four Japanese players over who are all playing well.

“I think Celtic have four really good players.

"Yosuke has more than 10 caps for Japan and is a great talent. Reo is only getting better by the day and won two league titles in Japan. Daizen is very quick and has all the ability required for modern football and matches the style of the manager.

“I hope more Japanese players will join Celtic in the future and help the club, but I also have my former team-mate Stephen McManus who is now a coach there, and I wish him good luck."

Prior to Kyogo's arrival, only two Japanese players had represented Celtic with Nakamura being joined by Koki Mizuno for a short spell under Gordon Strachan.

In 2007 he was nominated for the Ballon d'Or, was named Scottish Player of the Year and Scottish Football Writers Association Footballer of the Year and became the first Japanese player to score in the UEFA Champions League

Nakamura might be turning out for J2 League club Yokohama FC at 43-years-old but the influential midfielder confesses he's still following Celtic from the other side of the world.

"I am one of the Celtic supporters in the Far East now and I hope they will all carve their name in the history of the club and I wish them all the best luck.”
