After a year of anticipation, the former Netflix series Uncoupled will not be moving forward at Showtime. The comedy, produced by Paramount Global sibling MTV Entertainment Studios, was initially revived by Showtime following its cancellation at Netflix. Unfortunately, the decision has been made to scuttle the show, despite efforts to adapt it to fit the sensibilities of Showtime, now integrated into Paramount's flagship streaming platform, Paramount+.
Season two of Uncoupled, starring Neil Patrick Harris as a man navigating life post-breakup with his long-time boyfriend played by Tuc Watkins, was scheduled to begin filming last summer. However, production was delayed due to dual strikes by writers and actors. The first season also featured Tisha Campbell, Brooks Ashmanskas, Emerson Brooks, and Marcia Gay Harden.
The series was created by Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman, with executive producers including Harris and Lilly Burns. Jax Media and MTV Entertainment Studios collaborated on production. Uncoupled premiered on Netflix in July 2022 to generally positive reviews, with critics praising its wry humor and self-awareness. Despite this, the show failed to gain significant traction with viewers, only briefly entering Netflix's top 10 rankings and never appearing on Nielsen's U.S. streaming charts.
The news of Uncoupled's cancellation was first reported by Deadline, and representatives for Showtime have not provided further comment on the decision.
