Should you keep ketchup in the fridge or the cupboard? Heinz settles the debate

Unless you have been living under a rock without any condiments, you will have found yourself in a passionate debate over where ketchup is supposed to be stored at least once in your lifetime.

Some believe it is meant to be kept in the cool, dark interiors of a cupboard, while others are convinced it needs to be refrigerated.

Beloved ketchup producer Heinz has finally addressed the age-old debate, revealing that ketchup should, in fact, be kept in the fridge.

The brand’s official Twitter account shared its stance on the debate, saying: “FYI: Ketchup. goes. in. the. fridge!!!”.

Since the tweet was shared on June 27, the lovers of the sweet tomato sauce have aired their thoughts on it, with one Twitter user asking: “Why is it not in the fridge at the supermarkets then?”

The Heinz account responded by sharing a photo of bottles of Heinz ketchup in a supermarket fridge.

Another user has been appalled by the thought of cold ketchup, tweeting: “Cold sauce on hot food? No.”

Supermarket giant Lidl’s official account chimed in on the conversation, joking: “FYI: Ketchup. goes. in. a. croissant!!!” to which the Heinz account replied: “Already there”, alongside a fitting photograph featuring a croissant with a dollop of ketchup.

Heinz also launched a poll to see where people stood on the debate. The results showed that 63.2 per cent of ketchup lovers were pro placing their condiment in the fridge, while the remaining 36.8 per cent opted for their cupboards.

What happens if ketchup is not refrigerated?

While it is safe for ketchup to be stored in the cupboard until it’s opened, once it’s opened, it needs to be refrigerated, according to some experts.

This is because the taste will start to get impacted after it is exposed to air.

What condiments shouldn’t be stored in the fridge?

Unlike ketchup, there are some condiments that are supposed to be kept in the cupboard.

These are usually sauces that are rich in vinegar or condiments that are oils. Coconut oil and olive oil, for instance, is best when kept in a cupboard.

Similarly, chocolate spreads and peanut butter spreads are okay to be kept at room temperature.
