The first three seasons of Ben Banogu’s career haven’t instilled much hope for his future with the Indianapolis Colts, which brings up a relatively big question.
Should the Colts consider trading the former second-round pick before he hits free agency in 2023?
As Bleacher Report named one player each team should trade, Banogu was the choice for the Colts.
Maybe the Colts will try to see if Banogu’s potential finally materializes this season. Or they can move him on a low-level deal since their group of defensive ends is far more stable today than it was entering the offseason.
Banogu wasn’t used much in Matt Eberflus’ scheme. While general manager Chris Ballard preferred to draft players with high-end traits, Eberflus liked to use the bigger defensive ends to contain the edges.
With Gus Bradley now coming into town as the new defensive coordinator, his scheme and the use of the LEO position fit much better for Banogu’s skill set.
The TCU product is an uber-athletic player with length to help him set the edge. He hasn’t flashed much outside of the 2021 preseason, and he’ll be on the roster bubble yet again in 2022.
Hopefully, this new attacking scheme from Bradley will help Banogu find a solidified role along the defensive line because as harsh as it may seem, time is running out for him to prove he’s worth a second contract with the Colts.
