Should schools be closed to help stop Strep A?

Concern has been rising across the country about Strep A, with the illness now having caused the deaths of 15 children since September.

Strep A is a common bacteria that people carry in their throats on on their skin, but can cause disease in certain circumstances.

The infections it can cause include skin infection impetigo, strep throat and scarlet fever. It also leads to more serious illness if it gets into other areas of the body where it shouldn't normally be, such as the bloodstream or lungs.

It's a disease that can be infectious and while doctors have advised parents with ill children not to attend school, there are not currently any plans in place to close schools entirely.
