Here’s an interesting idea for the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason — go out and make an offer on Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
The Bengals have an obvious need at running back with Joe Mixon’s future an unknown and CEH is another one of those key components of LSU’s historic campaign alongside Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler says teams have an interest in CEH as a trade option, although so far, the Chiefs haven’t been overly vocal about wanting to move him.
Still, it sure feels like the proverbial writing is on the wall after Isiah Pacheco’s breakout and the fact Ronald Jones was active over CEH in the Super Bowl.
To this point in his career, CEH has been a bust after being a first-round pick in 2020. But that could mean the trade cost is as small as a late-round pick.
What would the Bengals get? Beyond the obvious LSU chemistry in an offense that might help turn things around for CEH, he’s a good pass-catching option and still has two years left on his rookie contract, counting the fifth-year option.
It’s just a fun idea for the Bengals to consider and wouldn’t prevent the team from potentially drafting a running back in the early to mid-rounds this year, too. A trade wouldn’t even demand that CEH must see the field — but it’s hard not to wonder if a change in scenery couldn’t unlock some of that potential and fill a need on the depth chart for Cincinnati this offseason.
