Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry during a meeting in the German city of Bonn (Egyptian Foreign Ministry)

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed with members of the Group of 77 and China climate change and the priorities of the next Egyptian presidency of COP27.

He is the President-Designate of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the UN Framework Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC).

Egypt intends to implement its climate commitments and come up with a balanced outcome that addresses a variety of priority issues, including emission reduction, adaptation to climate change, loss and damage mitigation, and climate finance.

Shoukry delivered his remarks during two meetings with members of the Group of 77 and China, in addition to the heads of geographical and political groups at the 56th session of the UN climate change subsidiary bodies.

He said Egypt is keen to keep the climate negotiations separate from the latest geopolitical developments in order to enhance confidence between all parties and ensure a smooth negotiation process.

“Shoukry praised the role played by Group of 77 and China, of which Egypt is a member, in supporting the interests and concerns of developing countries in climate change negotiations and supporting Egypt’s efforts in COP27,” Egyptian foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafez said in a statement.

In the meeting with heads of the different geographic and political groups participating in the climate change negotiations, Shoukry was keen to listen to their visions, priorities, and concerns on various topics related to international climate action, the statement said.

The Foreign Minister also stressed Egypt’s aspiration for high-level participation by heads of state and government in the summit hosted by the President during the conference on November 7-8, 2022.

Egypt looks forward to the participation of all states and parties concerned with climate action in all the events of the conference, in a manner that confirms the significance that the international community continues to attach to the fight against climate change amid various successive international developments.
