Shotts scheme praised by anti-poverty campaigners after Real Living Wage commitment

A Shotts social enterprise has been praised by anti-poverty campaigners following its decision to pay the Real Living Wage to employees.

Your Pay Your Way has this week been accredited as a Living Wage employer.

The Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at Your Pay Your Way receive a minimum hourly wage of £9.90.

Your Pay Your Way founder Adele Prendergast said: “‘Becoming a living wage employer is more important now than ever with the rising cost of living.

“Working in the financial education sector means we talk household budgets and managing them daily.

“Having a workforce who receive at least the living wage and who feel valued within our enterprise means our staff shouldn’t have to worry about making ends meet.

“It was the right thing to do as a responsible employer.”

In Scotland, more than 14 per cent of all jobs pay less than the real Living Wage - around 330,000 jobs.

Since 2011 the Living Wage movement has delivered a pay rise to over 52,000 people in Scotland and put over £310 million extra into the pockets of low paid Scottish workers.

Peter Kelly, Director of The Poverty Alliance said: “We all need an income that is enough to cover our needs and protect us from poverty, and it’s only right that employers pay a wage that reflects the cost of living.

“Too many workers in Scotland are paid less than the real Living Wage and, at a time of rising costs, are struggling to stay afloat.

“The real Living Wage can offer protection from those rising costs.

“Congratulations to Your Pay Your Way on their Living Wage commitment, and I hope more organisations follow their lead by becoming Living Wage accredited.”
