Shops shut after 'huge' cordon shuts Bold Street for hours

Shutters stayed down and shop workers were bemused after Merseyside Police shut Bold Street for a number of hours this morning.

The city centre street that sees hundreds of people walk up and down a day was rocked when people on their way to work were welcomed with a "huge" police cordon that spanned from the junction with Hannover Street up to the British Heart Foundation shop. Despite no confirmation from the police, people working on the street were led to believe something serious had happened.

One member of staff at Bernardo's said she arrived at work in the morning and was forced to walk around the other side with police and forensics at the scene. She said: "It was cordoned off from right at the bottom up to the British Heart Foundation.

"I don’t have a clue what’s happened but I couldn’t walk up the street and I had to walk all the way round."

The cordon is believed to have been lifted around 9.30am, with Bold Street entrance to Liverpool Central Station being reopened shortly after, but the likes of Caffe Nero and Card Factory still remained shut at 10am after being caught up in the taped-off area.

One member of staff at Resurrection, who asked not to be named, told the ECHO he believed it had been a stabbing in the early hours. He said: "Someone was stabbed apparently, I’m not sure whereabouts on Bold Street but it was all cordoned off this morning."

Another woman, who works at the British Heart Foundation shop, said that when she arrived "dead early" she was met with the road blocked off, with forensic officers still at the scene at around 9.30am, although the cordon had since been removed.

She said: "Not a clue why it was up. I came in dead early and it was just there but even next door don’t know what it is."

Merseyside Police has been approached for comment.
