Pre-loved and pre-owned clothing are becoming increasingly popular as a way to save money and be kind to the planet. Rejecting fast fashion culture and shopping through a second hand store or site could be a great money saving move.
Buying second hand clothes is not a new phenomenon or an innovative way to save money but is often forgotten about in the world of fast fashion. Circular marketplace Depop found that its users could save up to 25% per item when shopping through their site.
Over half of shoppers say that they have been buying more second hand clothes to save money in 2022. While there are issues surrounding authenticity of items and size advertising, the majority of items can be found for a fraction of their original value.
The online marketplace recommends shopping around on the site until you find a price you’re happy with. This could take days and if you’re struggling then don’t be afraid to send an offer to the seller.
Be polite when sending this and make sure your offer is reasonable - don’t offer £10 for something selling at £40. Check out the seller and any reviews or interactions with other buyers to see if they are legitimate.
Depop isn’t the only space to buy second hand either, there’s other sites like Vinted and Ebay or go to your local charity shop. Across the country vintage markets have blossomed with kilo sales popping up as a great way to get the most out of your money.
Selling second hand yourself can help you earn back money from clothes you no longer wear so rather than ending up in landfill they can bring joy to another person. Depop estimates their sellers aged between 18 and 35 can make on average £350 per year through the site.
While this isn't thousands, it could mean you have a bit more money to spend during the cost of living crisis. Christmas is on the way and splashing out on an outfit for your office party could be much cheaper by using these pre-loved sites.
