Shoppers ridicule Tesco special 'banquet' for King Charles III coronation

Shoppers have ridiculed a Tesco special offer for customers to have a ‘coronation banquet’. The line-up for the meal to celebrate King Charles III’s rise to the throne might be considered by some to be underwhelming.

‘Banquets’ normally might include special meat and unusual dishes. In a post on Facebook, the chain said: “More banquet for your buck.”

Tesco then unveils the slap-up feed for anyone celebrating the coronation - oven chips, a Margherita pizza, cheddar cheese and some apples. Jo Holland replied saying: “That is not a banquet!!!! Or perhaps it is to us peasants.”

John Norman added: “Celebrate the coronation with pizza chips and cheese??” Then Colleen Whyatt replied to him: “Don’t forget the apples!” Dave Daffin said: “Hardly a banquet is it?”

Christina McNamara wasn’t impressed with Tesco’s overall efforts for the big event. She said: “I went to tesco(wrexham) and looked all over the store and was surprised to see the only things I could find to celebrate the Kings coronation was...a cake tin, a Teddy bear and a cake plate.

"Thankfully asda had a whole row of flags, tea towels, bunting, british party themed items etc... such a let down tesco. You did the same for the queen’s platinum jubilee.”

When Queen Elizabeth II took the throne, a special dish - coronation chicken - was invented. This proved to be an enduring recipe - a kind of curried chicken in a sauce, which is still popular today.

This time, a special Coronation quiche has been created - made with spinach, broad beans and tarragon. The recipe was chosen by the King and Queen Consort because it works as a sharing dish, can be served hot or cold, suits a wide range of dietary requirements and can be easily adapted to suit different tastes.

It's unlikely Tesco's banquet collection will live on as long.
