As the rising cost of living continues to put pressure on families, many will be looking for ways to cut costs whilst still enjoying the meals they love. To help shoppers make their money go further this year, Asda has launched a new initiative that allows customers to feed a family of four a hot evening meal for a week for under £20.
The retailer launched their Just Essentials range in May last year, aiming to provide low-cost food essentials to shoppers on a budget. Now, the supermarket has put together a seven-day budget-friendly tea-time plan using products from the entry-level range.
The Just Essentials ‘7 for £20’ plan is available on Asda.com now and can be found in just one click on the site - meaning customers can browse the seven recipes and add each ingredient required to their basket before checking out.

The recipes that will feed a family of four all week for under £20 include the likes of tuna and tomato pasta, fish pie, sausage and mash or chicken stew and rice. The plan aims to help families plan and cook a whole week's worth of delicious and healthy evening meals for as little as £2.10 per meal for four.
Once all of the ingredients arrive at home, shoppers can follow the method to create each meal on the Asda Good Living website.
Asda’s Just Essentials meal plan includes the below evening meals:
Monday – Sausage and Mash
Tuesday – Fish Biryani
Wednesday – Fish Pie
Thursday – Bacon and Pea Frittata
Friday – Tuna and Tomato Pasta
Saturday – Chicken Stew and Rice
Sunday – Chicken Pasta
The cheapest ingredient to buy from the list is 24p for a tin of garden peas, while the most expensive is £2.74 for chicken thighs. All of the main ingredients tot up to £18.32 - all you need in the cupboard already is salt, pepper, mixed herbs and olive oil. You can add these on the 7 for £20 deal, but it will take you slightly over the £20.
Sam Dickson, Acting Chief Customer Office at Asda, said: “Our reputation for offering quality, low-cost food products means that we’re trusted by families and shoppers looking for good food on a budget.
“Following the successful launch of our Just Essentials range, our 7 meals for £20 plan goes one step further by offering recipe suggestions that can help customers create delicious, healthy meals for the whole family at a time when customers are looking for ways to make their shopping budgets work harder”.
On social media, shoppers have praised the supermarket for helping feed families on a budget. Commenting on a post in Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, Jemima Matthews said: “Well done Asda. It’s simply showing you it’s quite easy to make a week or meals if you put some effort in it. Instead of spending £20 on a takeaway or Mcdonalds or junk food. Everyone can have a decent meal.”
Dawn Bell added: “This post is fabulous and if it helps one family who are struggling then well done.”
While Alison Blackburn added: “I added lots of Asda essential range to my weekly shop and everything is great and best of all good value for money. I think this is an amazing idea for those struggling.”
