Shoppers fled in terror when a freak hailstorm battered the roof of a department store until it collapsed.
Shocking phone footage of the incident looks similar to a disaster movie, showing people screaming and running for their lives as a tonne of debris tumbles down towards them.
The collapse occurred at the Soriana department store, in Benito Juarez borough, in the Mexican capital Mexico City on Sunday June 12.
Officials said the ceiling gave way after a relentless storm of giant hailstones battered the store's roof for 30 minutes.
In one terrifying phone video, water can be seen flooding through the ceiling above the store's technology department.
As the weight of the hailstones becomes too great, the entire ceiling gives way, scattering frightened shoppers.
A second video shows the devastation around the store's food department revealing how the entire roof collapsed into a tangle of twisted metal.
Astonishingly only one person was injured during the disaster while more than 200 shoppers and staff were evacuated.
Santiago Taboada Cortina, 36 -mayor of Benito Juarez -reported that one person required medical attention after suffering an anxiety attack.
He added: “It was a hailstorm that lasted almost 30 minutes, very intense, which caused the store roof to collapse.
“We arrived at the site, at Soriana in Mixcoac, and unfortunately a quarter of the store structure had collapsed due to the large quantity of hailstones that fell within minutes of the storm.
“We arrived and were practically the first to respond. The mayor’s office arrived at the first minute.”
The mayor said an investigation into the collapse is ongoing.
