Shopper goes wild in the aisles to raise money for Lanarkshire foodbank

A popular event has returned to a Lanarkshire supermarket raising cash for a local foodbank.

Aldi in Hamilton hosted its Supermarket Sweep on Saturday as one chosen shopper went wild down the aisles for charity.

Lucky winner of the in-store competition Joanne Sinclair took part in the five-minute trolley dash on August 21.

She was able to raise £175.98 for Hamilton District Foodbank whilst picking up £175 worth of Aldi favourites for herself in the fun challenge.

The competition has proved popular amongst Lanarkshire shoppers in recent years with one Supermarket Sweep event also taking place in Rutherglen last year.

The winner is tasked with filling their trolley with as many products as they can get their hands on within a five minute timer.

It is then tallied up, and the total sum is matched by the Aldi who donate the cash equivalent to a local foodbank.

Speaking after her successful trolley dash last week, Joanne told Lanarkshire Live : “I had a wonderful time running the sweep. The staff were so friendly, and I am delighted to have raised some money for the local foodbank who do such a wonderful job in the community.”

Isobel Graham, Hamilton District Foodbank manager, welcomed the donation.

She added: “We are delighted to receive this donation and the support of Aldi. This donation will go towards buying in fresh produce which makes a lovely addition to our food parcels.”

Richard Holloway from Aldi said: “We are proud our Supermarket Sweep is a firm favourite across the country, and we are so pleased to bring it back this year.

"Congratulations to Joanne who managed to raise an incredible £175.98 for Hamilton District Foodbank and snap up a whole load of Aldi treats for herself.”

Aldi’s Supermarket Sweep will return to Countesswell, Aberdeen in August, giving more savvy shoppers the chance to rummage through the aisles for a good cause.

Customers can look out for upcoming competitions and apply in-store or by emailing supermarketsweep@aldi.co.uk.
