A baffled shopper has described how he returned home to find a box of eggs he’d just bought had hatched into chickens.
The man revealed how the eggs, which he bought from an online supermarket, hatched into chicks during a 39-degree Celsius heatwave.
The shopper - named only as Wang in Chinese media - had bought a carton of 10 eggs and left them on his kitchen counter in Nanjing, Jiangsu province.
But when he came home from work on July 12, he found that one of the eggs had hatched and another egg had a second chick breaking through its shell.
Video footage of the egg carton shows one fully hatched black chick stuck under the plastic lid.
Wang - who is now raising the chicks - said that the hot summer weather had probably helped incubate the eggs.
Mr. Wang said the chicks were unsteady on their feet but are improving with hand rearing.
The video that went viral, attracted mixed comments, with one commentator named 'Fight Tu Fat Tiger' pointing out: "You are the winner, chickens are more expensive than eggs."
It is possible that some of the chicks will grow up to be hens, meaning Wang may never need to purchase eggs again.
Three weeks ago, mum Deza Empson, 31, found herself mum to three ducklings after they hatched out from a box of eggs she purchased from a supermarket.
Deza from Redcar said she used the store bought eggs to test an incubator she had purchased to help her breeding budgies.
To her shock three of Deza’s eggs hatched and she is now the proud owners of three ducklings, named Daisy, Dusk and River.
Dusk and River will go to live with Deza’s cousin but she says she will keep Daisy as they have developed a special bond.
Deza said: "They're so lovely, but it just wasn't what I expected at all.
"Eggs you buy from the supermarket just shouldn't be fertile.
"My nan loves duck eggs and she won't touch them any more now she knows they might be alive, and friends I've told don't ever want to eat eggs again."
