Shop owner puts Donald Trump on ‘naughty step’ near mother's birthplace

A BUSINESS owner in the island where Donald Trump's mother was born has put up a banner telling the US president "shame on you".

Lewis Revival owner, Sarah Venus was born in the United States and said she put up the banner which reads "shame on you, Donald John" after feeling “powerless" watching Trump's treatment of Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the White House.

Venus posted the image to Facebook in which a Ukrainian flag can also be seen hanging form an upstairs window.

Islanders are being offered free signs which also say the statement.

The vintage and house decor business is just miles from where Trump’s mother, Mary Anne, was born.

Mary Anne was born in the village of Tong, just a couple of miles north of Stornoway, in 1912.

Because of this, her first language was Scottish-Gaelic. However, she later learned English when she attended school.

In 1930, as was common for islanders at this time, Mary Anne set sail for America on the RMS Transylvania.

When she arrived, she worked as a domestic servant and nanny before meeting Fred Trump and marrying him in 1936.

On social media, the business owner wrote: "New banner on our shopfront at 16 South Beach in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. Who better to put the President of the United States on the naughty step than the island where his immigrant mother was born? We cannot stay silent.

"Free window signs available at Lewis Revival and Empty House Traders if you would like to add your voice."

"The struggle for democracy and accountability is worldwide."

Speaking to The Press and Journal, Venus said: “I put up the poster in response to what is happening in the US.

“As you can tell from my accent, I am adopted into Lewis. I was born in the US but I am a British citizen.”

“I am a small business owner in Stornoway, and I feel a bit powerless. People in the States are trying to do so much, and they feel powerless.

She added: “So, I have put the poster outside our shop in a very visible place. If I am asked to remove it, I will display it on our new building.

“We have written to our MP to raise concerns about how this whole situation is being handled.”
