Shop owner dumped four SOFAS at the back of his business

A Bolton shopkeeper has been fined hundreds of pounds after being caught dumping sofas at the back of his business. Swanara Mohammed, owner of Tops Mini Market, faced magistrates recently after Bolton Council environmental enforcement officers found four two-seater sofas around the side of Derby Street last September. Mohammed, of Derby Street, was fined £1,500 and ordered to pay costs of £590 and a victim surcharge of £150.

He is one of three Bolton residents who have recently received court fines for flytipping offences dating back to last autumn. Amanda Rostas, of Marion Street, appeared in court after dumping items at the back of her street.

Enforcement officers found a large plastic box, toilet seat and vacuum cleaner hose amongst the items dumped. The 24-year-old was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay costs of £478 and a victim surcharge of £100 at the back of her street.

Bolton Council have also prosecuted Nicole Southworth, of Campbell Street, Farnworth. It comes after a pile of waste was found to the rear of the street - including bin bags and a television box which included a label with a name and address.

Southworth was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay costs of £601 and a victim surcharge of £100. Bolton Council is now firing a warning to would-be flytippers that it will prosecute those responsible.

Jon Dyson, the council's director of place services, said: “The council is committed to tackling fly-tipping and taking legal action against those who commit these offences.

“Fly-tipping is not only an act of anti-social behaviour, but it has a detrimental impact on the quality of the local environment , and the clean-up costs are paid for by taxpayers. Every householder, business and landowner is responsible for the responsible disposal of waste from their property.”
