Shooter at Joel Osteen's church identified as mentally unstable woman

Shooting incident at television evangelist Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church in Houston

Houston police are providing new details about the shooter who targeted Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church on Sunday. The shooter has been identified as Jeanette Juan Moreno, a woman from El Salvador with a history of mental health issues. Moreno, who sometimes identified as a man named Jeffrey, had a lengthy criminal record and had been placed under an order for emotional detention in 2016.

According to authorities, Moreno opened fire inside the megachurch using an AR-15 rifle. Disturbingly, the weapon had the word 'Palestine' written on it, raising concerns about a potential anti-Semitic motive. During the shooting, two individuals were injured: a 57-year-old man and Moreno's seven-year-old son, who tragically suffered a gunshot wound to the head and is not expected to survive.

Off-duty police officers who quickly responded to the incident engaged Moreno in a shootout. Their brave actions are credited with potentially saving many lives. Police commended the officers for holding their ground against rifle fire at close range until the shooter was neutralized. Moreno was ultimately killed during the confrontation.

Further investigation into the incident has led authorities to discover anti-Semitic writings and a Palestine sticker on the buttstock of the rifle used by Moreno. This has raised concerns about the motives behind the attack and has prompted authorities to look into any potential ties between the shooter and extremist ideologies.

The focus now shifts to how someone with a documented history of mental health issues and a criminal record was able to acquire an AR-15. Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating this matter, highlighting the need to examine existing legislation and mechanisms surrounding firearm acquisition to prevent such incidents in the future.

Tragic events like this one once again underscore the fact that individuals determined to commit violent acts may not be deterred by existing laws and regulations. The incident at Lakewood Church serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues and ensuring adequate support for individuals who may be at risk of harming themselves or others.

As the investigation into this shooting continues, law enforcement officials will work tirelessly to uncover all pertinent details and establish a comprehensive understanding of the shooter's motives. This incident highlights the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures in order to prevent such acts of violence in our communities.
