Shoji Kawamori Finally Reveals His Creative Involvement With 'Devil May Cry 5'

Shoji Kawamori (left) has designed some of the Devil Breaker arms in ‘Devil May Cry 5′.

With all sorts of news breaking about Devil May Cry 5 at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, one of the more interesting reveals is that Shoji Kawamori has been designing the new robotic arms in the game.

Called Devil Breakers, these mechanical arms are made by Nico for Nero after he loses his own Devil Bringer arm. Each of the Devil Breaker arms offer different functionality and its these that Kawamori has lent his creative talents too.

What’s noteworthy about this collaboration is that this is the first time Kawamori has been involved in the Devil May Cry series and is a departure from the more typical mecha games such as Armored Core and Omega Boost to name a few.

Talking with Hideaki Itsuno on stage, it was clear that Itsuno was not only a longtime fan of Kawamori’s work but that he was keen to follow Kawamori’s ideas regarding how the Devil Breakers might work.

With that in mind, it makes sense to share some of the design sketches that Kawamori created for three of the Devil Breakers he worked on in the game.

This is a rocket punch Devil Breaker, that Nero can fire at enemies and also ride around on.

Buster Arm
Meant to recreate the Devil Bringer that Nero lost, it is meant for a more brute force approach.

Rawhide
A mechanical retractable rip, Nero can use this to subdue multiple enemies at once.

As with all of Kawamori’s work, these Devil Breaker designs look amazing and I am really glad he is involved in the game. Not least because his creative approach always brings fresh new ideas to the table and that’s something the Devil May Cry games sorely need.

Devil May Cry 5 is released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on March 8.
