Shocking video shows two cars smashing into each other in Cork city

A shocking video which shows two cars apparently smashing into each other is blowing up on social media in Cork city.

CorkBeo reports that the video, which has been widely shared on Whatsapp and on community facebook pages on the northside of the city - was shot around lunchtime in the Glen area of the north city.

One local said he believes that the drivers involved had gotten into a row which had gotten out of control and one motorist may have deliberately driven into the other.

"It happened around lunchtime today in the Glen and people couldn't believe what they were seeing," the local told CorkBeo.

One of the cars sustains heavy frontal damage and smoke and steam is seen escaping from the engine and radiator.

In the video, onlookers can be heard commenting as the cars violently smash into each other, before at least one speeds away from the area after being heavily damaged.

However, locals say the occupants of both cars appear to have escaped without injury.

Gardai have been asked for further details on the incident, which has greatly shocked the local community in an area that has suffered a rise in joyriding incidents of late.

Local councillor Ken O'Flynn said the incident had shocked and dismayed people in the Glen.

"The Glen had a very bad reputation going back years, but the people there have worked very hard to change that reputation and felt that a lot of progress was being made," said Cllr O'Flynn.

"But what we saw here today with this incident was a total lack of respect for the people for the area and for the safety of bystanders. It is anti-social behaviour of the very worst kind. It's absolutely shocking.

"And you have to say, it's down largely to a lack of Garda presence and control in the area. Local residents feel that they are being left to suffer shocking anti-social behaviour on their own."
