Dramatic footage has emerged of a historic war plane bearing German World War Two livery on fire after it crash landed on a US highway.

Twitter user @MaclarenH posted the vide online after the crash yesterday in Los Angeles.

Mr Maclaren said the incident occurred "by his girlfriend's work on the 101" freeway in south California.

Amazingly the pilot was extricated from the plane without injury, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The plane was a Second World War era T-6 Texan, but dressed up with the markings of a German fighter plane. It was reportedly owned by a non-profit organisation, Condor Squadron, which flies the historic planes for events and parades, according to KTLA news.

KTLA recorded the plane crash from above, ad said it took place in Agoura Hills. Cars were seen driving past without stopping and some motorists took pictures of the carnage.

Emergency services attended to tackle the blaze.
