Shocking moment watermelons thrown as fight breaks out near fire-hit supermarket

Watermelons were thrown as Brits brawled outside a blazing supermarket.

Tempers flared and a supermarket caught light in shocking footage that showed grown men brutally fighting in front of a fruit and veg display in Saltley, Birmingham.

As the flames ripped through the Zeenat store yesterday evening, fire crews tried to tackle the blaze and a police officer could be heard telling people to get back as he tried in vain to restrain the brawling men.

More and more officers rushed in to try and break up the violent brawl, BirminghamLive reported.

The men can be seen punching and kicking one another as they pile into the fight.

At one moment, the terrifying footage appears to show a watermelon being wielded like a weapon.

Further footage showed people pushing and shoving in the crowd as officers attempt to calm things down.

The fire, which saw more than 70 firefighters, 12 engines, five response vehicles and two hydraulic platforms race to the scene, was started by accident.

In a statement, West Midlands Fire service said: “Our investigators are satisfied that last night's supermarket fire in Saltley started accidentally, when the outdoor burning of rubbish spread to the building.”

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “We are investigating after a fight broke out at the scene of a fire on Alum Rock Road, Birmingham last night (September 19).

“The investigation is in the early stages, but we believe the fight was started due to a cordon in place at the scene.

“No-one was seriously injured. We are still at the scene of the fire, supporting colleagues from the fire service.
