Shocking 25ft sinkhole swallows part of London street taking motorcycle with it

A massive sinkhole swallowed part of a residential road in London, taking with it a parked motorcycle, according to reports.

Residents living on the street where the incident occurred have been speaking out about the "exciting and scary" moment the sinkhole swallowed a section of their street in southeast London.

According to the US government, although the reason for sinkholes remains somewhat a mystery, they are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or rocks.

The reason for this is that these types of material can naturally be dissolved by groundwater circulating through them.

As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground allowing for a sinkhole to eventually occur.

The road on Martens Avenue, Bexleyheath, allegedly began to crack before collapsing at around 9:00 pm on Tuesday night.

One local told PA news agency: "It happened just outside my house and no one was injured as far as I am aware, thankfully.

However, he said there was one person on a bike that just managed to get himself out of the way of the crippling surface.

The man confirmed that the motorcyclist “left the scene before the emergency services arrived.”

According to authorities the road remained closed to traffic and pedestrians today for safety reasons while a date for reopening is yet to be confirmed.
