Shocked family beats odds of a billion to one after their chicken lays perfectly round egg

A family has beaten odds of a billion to one after their chicken laid a perfectly spherical egg. Annabel Mulcahy was stunned when she discovered the fully round egg at her home in Brize Norton over the weekend.

Mrs Mulcahy has kept chickens for the last 20 years, with her West Oxfordshire family rescuing more in recent years as her children started to take more of an interest in the chickens. Twinskie – named by one of Mrs Mulcahy’s daughters – laid the unique egg to the family's utter amazement.

The mother said: “On Saturday morning, I opened the nesting box and it was there, a perfect circle. I was Googling it and was quoted that it’s a one in a billion. It’s really weird, I had to a double take. I can roll it on the table like a marble.”

Mrs Mulcahy is now looking to sell the egg, using some of the money to rescue more chickens. She added: “I’ve put the egg for sale on eBay, some have gone for prices like £480 in the past.

“What I get will go towards getting an extra run so I can rescue more chickens. I’ve got nine at the moment, but three are being rehomed at a farm.

“I want to raise £100 for an extension to the run. I’ve had chickens on and off for the last 20 years, but it’s steadily increased over the last three years.

“They’re so friendly. If I’m in the garden, they’ll come and sunbathe at your feet. Twinskie has the nickname Labrador because she’ll follow you round.”
