Shock as NHS Glasgow staff attacked nearly 400 times a month during coronavirus pandemic

Glasgow NHS workers have been abused nearly 400 times a month during lockdown, shocking new figures have revealed.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said that since March there had been 2,300 cases of violence and aggression towards frontline staff.

Now the health board has urged people to 'be kind' adding that that the workers 'deserve better'.

Violence against the healthcare heroes has flared across the country during the coronavirus pandemic.

Figures released last week showed 22 assaults reported by staff at the Vale of Leven Hospital and three violent incidents at Dumbarton Joint Hospital over the last five months.

Two healthcare heroes are being assaulted in Paisley’s hospitals every day during the coronavirus pandemic, stark new figures have revealed.

There have been more than 300 incidents of violence or aggression towards those working on the frontline.

The numbers have been described as “deeply concerning” by MSP Neil Bibby, who says medics should not have to fear for their safety while battling Covid-19.

These statistics are deeply concerning,” Neil Bibby, MSP for West Scotland, said. “No one should go to work and face physical violence for just doing their job.

“NHS staff and other key workers have gone above and beyond to protect us during this pandemic. Their safety at work should be absolutely paramount.

“This behaviour is not acceptable and should not be regarded as an occupational hazard.”

He added: “This serious problem is becoming all too familiar and needs addressed by all the relevant authorities to ensure our hospitals are safe spaces for staff, patients and their families.”

A total of 317 incidents of abuse were recorded between March 1 and August 5.

There were 119 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and a further 98 incidents at Dykebar Hospital

A statement from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde today reads: "Between March and early August, our staff have been subjected to violence and aggression at their place of work almost 2,300 times!

"This is completely unnecessary, unacceptable and can be very frightening for them and our patients. We feel they deserve better.

"Our teams have, during the covid pandemic been working tirelessly to save lives and support our patients and their families during a time of crisis.

"All they ask of you is to please be respectful to them and other patients when you visit our sites."
