Shirley Ballas on why she gives Strictly trolls a 'second chance' after bully row

Shirley Ballas has spoken about dealing with Strictly Come Dancing trolls on social media, saying that she often gives critical viewers a "second chance".

She made the admission whilst on This Morning earlier. Shirley, 62, spoke about being on the popular BBC show with Alison Hammond, 47, and Dermot O'Leary, 49.

After being head judge since 2017, Shirley has been known for her high standards and tough critiques.

Her opinions have divided fans in the latest series, with the judge even being defended over accusations of misogyny from fans.

Speaking ahead of the final on the ITV daytime show, Shirley said that she sees "every message" and gives "second chances" as Alison asked how she copes with people being "not nice".

Shirley - who's previously urged viewers to be respectful - said: "I look at the message, depending on how bad it is, I give them a second chance. I write them a little message."

The dance teacher said she tries to explain herself in her responses, but added: "Even though I don't have to explain myself." Alison agreed that she doesn't need to do so.

The head judge said if a message is "written politely" and "they want to learn," then she is "happy" to engage. She added that she sees all the messages directed towards her.

Shirley said: "I do see every message that comes in though." Alison prompted her to confirm that she "watches everything," to which Shirley said: "Every single message I see."

She continued: "Sometimes it's just curiousity, so I'm happy to respond to that. Sometimes it's mean. I give them a second chance but when it gets really bad then I just block".

Her comments come ahead of Strictly's final this weekend. It will see the remaining celebrities - like Fleur East, 35, and Molly Rainford, 22 - compete to be this year's winner.

They will be joined in the final by Hamza Yassin, 32, and Helen Skelton, 39. All four of the celebrity contestants will be accompanied by their respect dance partners.

The latest series of Strictly Come Dancing concludes tomorrow (December 17) on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 7.05pm.

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV and ITVX from 10am.
