Sherwood motorists expressed their surprise as new data from the Department for Transport showed drivers in the NG5 postcode area have the most penalty points in Nottingham. The figures revealed a total of 1,114 people in NG5 have reached six or more points on their driving licence, which is the equivalent of 6 percent of the area’s drivers.
Besides Sherwood, NG5 includes Arnold, Rise Park, Top Valley, and Redhill. Despite the new statistics, local drivers feel the figures do not reflect the reality and that the issue revolves around traffic and potholes, rather than motorists’ abilities.
Helen Greenwood, 38, a bartender and cleaner from Sherwood, said: “I don’t drive but I would say it’s about all the traffic more than anything because Mansfield Road should not be a four-lane road. People do Zoom around the corners as well. If you stand too close to the road you might have your face taken off by the side of the bus.

Karen Wilkinson, a 48-year-old nurse from Sherwood, said drivers are the same across the country. She said: “I don’t think we’re the worst.
“I’ve lived here for 25 years from Sussex and when I go back there, drivers are the same so I find the figures surprising. I don’t see how NG5 drivers are that bad.
“It’s about personal responsibility. I like my licence, I worked too hard for it to lose it. I think potholes don’t help drivers either because you try and avoid them all the time."
Matt Brown, 55 and from Sherwood, echoed that. He said: “It’s a busy area compared to other parts of the county. I’m not a driver but I haven’t necessarily noticed people being worse here compared to other places.”
Katrin Moye, 53, self-employed and from Sherwood, also highlighted the importance of responsibility on the roads. She said: “I don’t have a single point on my driving licence.
"I learned to drive quite late on, when I was 30, and I think women in general tend to be a bit more careful. I don’t agree with the figures, I’m surprised to hear that actually.”
Katrina Marsden, 37, a teacher from Sherwood, is also shocked about the figures, but said she has seen people speeding. She said: “I do see quite a lot of people revving their engines and speeding down the road which is dangerous, especially as there’s a school close by.
"I’m surprised to hear that we have the worst drivers though.” Phillip Jamson, 73, said “the statistics don’t prove anything”.
“I’ve been a motorcyclist and it’s very easy to get points. I think it’s ridiculous.
“It doesn’t mean you’re a bad driver because you could get 12 points in a week. I don’t think these statistics prove anything,” he added.
